Its port is one of the largest in the country and is the most important economic, commercial and cultural center of the Peloponnese and Western Greece. It is a focal point and is called the Gate of Greece to the West as it has direct communication with Italy and the European west in general.

Due to its location, Patras is often used as a starting point for mountain and sea excursions in the surrounding areas.

The Rio – Antirrio Bridge connects the Peloponnese with Central Greece, making the city easily and quickly accessible, while it is located at the intersection of two major roads, Olympia Odos and Ionia Odos.

The contribution of Patras is also important in the scientific and cultural life of the country, with the University of Patras, the TEI, the Open University, its well-known Carnival, the International Festival etc.

History.

The name Patras came according to mythology from Patreas, the mythical settler of the city, who after coming as head of settlers in the area of Aroi, expelled the Ionian inhabitants and enlarged the city by uniting the settlements Aroi, Antheia and Messatida giving the name Patrai .

During the Roman period the city flourished and became a cosmopolitan center of the Mediterranean. During the 2nd century AD the city of Patras is at its peak. With the transfer of the capital of the Roman state to Constantinople, in 330 AD, Patras gradually began to decline, while passing into the hands of the Byzantine Empire.

The presence and activity of Apostolos Andreas in the city during the time of Nero gives it a new character.
