It is an island with lush vegetation, olive groves and sandy beaches. Due to its strategic position, Corfu has been conquered repeatedly, first by the Romans and, later on, by the French, the Venetians and the British, all of whom have left their cultural mark. Prime examples are Napoleon\u2019s barracks (Liston) and the Palace of Michael and George, home to one of the greatest collections of Asian porcelain in the world. Ever since the 70s, Corfu has become a famous tourist attraction, with visitors from all over the globe. The Ionian bank.<\/li>\n<li>Also, the\u00a0<strong>first electricity factory<\/strong>\u00a0on Greek territory was operating here before 1860.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>first theater<\/strong>\u00a0in modern Greece was in Corfu.<\/li>\n<li>And the largest square in the Balkans is the\u00a0<strong>Esplanade<\/strong>\u00a0square.<\/li>\n<li>This island is the place with the\u00a0<strong>largest musical<\/strong>\u00a0and intellectual tradition by far in Greece.<\/li>\n<li>Corfu has the only\u00a0<strong>Georgian-style Palace<\/strong>\u00a0outside the UK, the Palace of Saints Michael and George.<\/li>\n<li>It was the birthplace of many Royals of Europe, i.e\u00a0<strong>Philip Prince of Edinburg<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/atcorfu.com\/the-durrells-in-corfu\/\"><strong>Durrells<\/strong>\u00a0family<\/a>\u00a0were residents of Corfu from 1936 to 1940.<\/li>\n<li>Is the home of the only\u00a0<strong>cricket team<\/strong>\u00a0in Hellas.<\/li>\n<li>The old city of Corfu, A UNESCO Heritage monument, keeps its multicultural character with Venetian, English, and French influences.<\/li>\n<li>And finally, the fact that this island\u00a0<strong>never felt Ottoman<\/strong>\u00a0oppression.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>How to come to Corfu?<\/h3>\n<p>In recent years, Corfu has become one of the favorite destinations for Greek tourists, especially during the Easter holiday, which has gained nationwide attention with its unique traditions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-672 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ferrycenter.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/corfu-2-300x200.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ferrycenter.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/corfu-2-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ferrycenter.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/corfu-2.webp 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Also in August when Greek and Italian visitors mingle with those from further north.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Egnatia highway has been built the island is easily accessible for residents of northern Greece too.<\/p>\n<p>From the port of <a href=\"https:\/\/ferrycenter.gr\/en\/%ce%bd%ce%b7%cf%83%ce%b9%cf%89%cf%84%ce%b9%ce%ba%ce%bf%ce%af-%cf%80%cf%81%ce%bf%ce%bf%cf%81%ce%b9%cf%83%ce%bc%ce%bf%ce%af\/%ce%b7%ce%b3%ce%bf%cf%85%ce%bc%ce%b5%ce%bd%ce%af%cf%84%cf%83%ce%b1\/\">Igoumenitsa<\/a> on the mainland, there is a very frequent modern ferry service, some crossing to <strong>Corfu<\/strong> in just over an hour, ferries from Igoumenitsa also land in the southern harbor of Lefkimi.<\/p>\n<p>More ferries to <strong>Corfu comes from the city of Patras and take between 6 to 7 hours to arrive<\/strong>. Also, the ferries from Italian ports are quite busy.<\/p>\n<p>For most visitors though, the gate to the island is the international airport Ioannis Kapodistrias which is connected with many major European airports.
